The aim of the information session with family members was to help create a better understanding of dementia and reduce its stigma, and to also help families identify the best strategies to have A Better Visit with their loved one who is living with dementia.
The A Better Visit presentation was conducted by Dementia Australia educator, Garrie. The workshop and presentation gave families members the opportunity to get to know each other better and share their own experiences with dementia.
Garrie shared useful information about: what dementia is; the various ways it can affect people; and how family members could have A Better Visit with their loved ones affected by dementia.
Garrie provided simple, practical strategies, such as undertaking an activity – with his own dad he used to peel potatoes.
Family member, Elizabeth said a couple of days after the presentation, “I tried shelling peas with Mum today! It worked so well!”
The session was incredibly helpful for the family members and team members who attended. Family member, Jackie said, “It was all explained so clearly. I have a much better understanding now… I’m going to bring in some shoes in for Dad to shine as we chat!”
