Lea Ferguson and Patricia ‘Pat’ Roffey have a friendship that goes beyond words.
Since moving into our Arcare Slacks Creek community in April 2018, Pat has been best mates with Personal Support Worker Lea.
Lea has been with Arcare for almost four years and she shared with us that she and Pat hit it off right away.
Besides supporting other residents, Lea is Pat’s Dedicated Carer but she is also more than that.
“We muck around, we make jokes; she is like a nana to me,” Lea shared.
From sharing personal stories to seeing Christmas lights together, their friendship is genuine and heartwarming to see.
Over the Christmas season, Pat’s daughter Donna actually brought Pat and the family to Lea’s house to see her Christmas lights.
“Lea has been an important and steadying influence in Mum’s life in Arcare at Slacks Creek. It is a comfort to know she is supporting Mum physically and emotionally when we cannot be there,” Donna shared.
Pat comes from a loving and supportive family and her children and grandchildren often come to visit her.
Besides catching up with family, Pat enjoys going to the hairdresser once a week and getting her hair done, and chatting with other residents in our community, such as Hazel, Jackie and Hetty.
Although there are times when Pat would feel a little down about life, Lea would always do her best to encourage her.
Pat has bowel cancer and many months ago, the doctors told her that she only had six months to December 2020 left to live.
“To keep her staying positive, I told her she’ll have to wait till March because her granddaughter is getting married then!” Lea said.
And this has encouraged Pat to remain strong and look to the future.
“I know I’ll be here; they gave me six months and look, I’ve been here seven,” Pat said.
Lea works at Slacks Creek four days a week and on the days she is not here, Pat misses her.
“She should be working seven days a week!” Pat joked.
“Lea looks after me and I know she is there when I need her. I couldn’t do without Lea,”
“She is completely reliable, we understand each other and if I want something, I know she will do it for me.”
When asked to describe Pat, Lea shared with us that, “Pat is a beautiful person, she is my favourite.”
Arcare’s Dedicated Assignment model is guided by the needs of our residents.
We celebrate and support ageing which is in line with Arcare’s values of relationships, uniqueness, partnerships and flexibility.
