Oscar and Freda, two clients from the Malvern East Community, recently celebrated 70 happy years together.
They recently shared their stories about growing up in South Africa. Oscar spent his childhood on the banks of the Vaal River in a small village called Parys while Freda was an hour away in Kronstad.
They were family friends for many years before developing a relationship and finally marrying on the 11th of July 1948.
Together they moved to Kronstad where Oscar owned a grocery store and later a Toyota franchise.
Their family home was always a hive of activity with parties happening until late at night and friends always dropping by to visit. Their two daughters, Merle and Margo, had an idyllic childhood growing up on the farm. They enjoyed horse riding, canoeing and fishing.
About 22 years ago they migrated to Melbourne where they joined the Templestowe Bowling Club and celebrated their golden anniversary with 100 friends and family. They refer to this stage of their lives as ‘the golden years’.
Oscar and Freda have been blessed with five grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, and are the matriarch and patriarch of a family of 28.
The chic and glamorous Freda is the love of Oscar’s life. She fusses over him constantly and they can often be seen sitting on a couch holding hands and whispering to each other.
They moved to Arcare Malvern East in April this year. They commented, ‘the environment is beautiful and the care is superb.’
Their advice on a happy marriage is to always hold hands and know when to compromise.
Congratulations Oscar and Freda on your wonderful anniversary.
