It was all hands on deck when the Little Critters visited Arcare Maroochydore.
Laughs, chuckles and plenty of cuddles were shared with so many childhood memories of farm life enjoyed.
“The pigs are my favourite,” said Jan who promptly asked to hold the spotted one.
Gently holding it; Jan’s face lit up.
Then all of a sudden, the pig made a loud squeal but no-one seemed frightened.
“I love how they all stick together, all mates just like us!” one of the residents said.
The introduction of animals in aged care is a growing trend across Australia and our manager at Arcare Maroochydore, Radhika, said that it brings so much joy to residents.
“The animals provide a welcome distraction for anyone who may be living with chronic pain and provides mental stimulation and nostalga, particularly for those with dementia,” Radhika said.
“It is great to see everyone out and socialising together petting the animals and enjoying the cuddles on their laps.”
For our residents the experience brought back many fond memories.
“The hay smell reminds me of when I was child living with my family on our property,” said Margaret.
“I love the motley pig!” said Isabel.
Michaela from Little Critters said the lambs are always a favourite but even the chickens, silkies, pekins and frizzle chickens bring smiles to the residents faces.
Michaela walked around introducing the animals to our residents and they were able to pat the animals and some even had them placed on their lap.
Staff were all curious as well and came to say hello to the animals.
It was a lovely afternoon shared by staff and residents at Arcare Maroochydore.
