When Antoinette moved in aged care at Arcare Surrey Hills thirteen months ago, she was feeling anxious and vulnerable about making the move.
Prior to moving into aged care, she was receiving one on one care in the community and had a respite stay at another aged care residence. However the prospect of moving into permanent aged care was beyond daunting for Antoinette, as she had always been able to do things on her own.
Moving into aged care was a huge adjustment for Antoinette, as she felt her whole life was being shifted. However the relationships that Antoinette has developed during her time at Arcare, has put her mind at ease.
Sheridan has been Antoinette’s dedicated carer since she moved into the residence. Over the time they have spent together, Antoniette and Sheridan’s relationship has blossomed from carer and clients, to close friends.
“We just clicked,” Sheridan said. “We are like two peas in a pod, sharing the same sense of humour.”
Arcare’s Dedicated Staff Assignment model has enabled Antoinette to fully settle into the community and enjoy her time at Arcare.
Arcare’s Dedicated Assignments involve all team members committing to work regular shifts with exactly the same small group of clients every time they come to work.
“Dedicated staff assignment means a lot to me. It changes how I feel. Like I am with friends, and not strangers. Sheridan has made me feel at home here. It feels like she is my granddaughter,” Antoinette reflected.
When asked, what makes Arcare’s Dedicated Staff Assignment so valuable, Sheridan replied,
“It gives us an opportunity to get to know the individual needs, preferences, and personalities of our clients; enabling us to form a bond with them. We are certainly able to provide a more tailored approach to the care this way.”
Antoinette’s daughter, Gisele praises the dedicated staff assignments at Arcare Surrey Hills, and attributes her mother’s ability to settle into aged care, to Sheridan.
“Sheridan is a very special young woman and is a perfect example of the Arcare model. From my perspective, it was comforting to know that mum had forged a close bond with Sheridan. When mum first moved into Arcare Surrey Hills, I had many moments of doubt, guilt and anxiety, and almost pulled her out and brought her to live with me again. I knew it was not the best solution, but the worry and anxiety overshadowed reasonable thinking. However over a short period of time, I began to notice that mum was happy and more relaxed. I’m glad it has all worked out for her and thank goodness for Sheridan!” Gisele said.
