The knitting appeal

In January, Arcare Caulfield’s knitting group came together to form a bushfire knitting committee.

Over 15 clients raised their hands to be involved in the knitting project. The group’s mission was to knit as many blankets, wraps and pouches that they possibly could, to donate to the LAOKO Snowy Mountains Wildlife Rescue.

The LAOKO Snowy Mountains Wildlife Rescue are currently caring for and helping rehabilitate injured and displaced animals, that have been affected by Australia’s recent bushfires.

The lifestyle team gathered all the wool, knitting needles and patterns for the group to follow. The group of 15 ladies eagerly started knitting and enjoyed the challenge of trying to follow the instructions and match the pattern.

However there was an initial hiccup, as a few of the ladies had been knitting in number of stitches instead of centimetres.

The group would always have a collective laugh, when a member of group would realise that because they were knitting in number of stitches, they had made a large instead of a small size; big difference!

While it wasn’t a huge issue, as the size could be adjusted to what they had already completed, many of the ladies were determined to start again to make  sure that they got it right.

“It’s a challenge!” One client exclaimed with a smile.

The ladies then began carefully measuring each section to ensure that each blanket, wrap and pouch was perfect.

Arcare Caulfield’s Bushfire Knitting Committee have already created a variety of products in a variety of sizes, and have already donated several dozen items to LAOKO Snowy Mountains Wildlife Rescue.

Lifestyle coordinator, Gail Perry said, “The ladies have really enjoyed putting their knitting needles towards a good cause. It’s great to see that they are  excited about knitting, as they feel that they are doing their part to help out, after the devasting fires we have experienced.”
