Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays from all of us at Arcare

Throughout our Arcare aged care residences around Australia, the month of December brings about an endless flow of Christmas carols, brightly-coloured tinsel and Santa visits.

Christmas sure is a busy and exciting time of the year for all clients and team members.

Many of our residences spend the month of December involving the clients in a variety of festive activities, such as decorating Christmas trees, baking Christmas cookies, making cards, carolling and of course, you can’t go without a residence Christmas party.

Here are some of the highlights from Arcare’s 2019 Christmas celebrations:

Arcare Burnside spent a wonderful Christmas lunch together with clients, family and friends.

Many sat around telling stories of how they used to spend Christmas when they had little ones and what they used to get up to in the school holidays.

As you looked around the room there were smiles, lots of laughter and Christmas cheer!

Everyone was having a wonderful time when an unexpected guest arrived, Santa!

There were lots of laughs and everyone wanted their photo taken with Santa, even the team members.

Christmas is an important time of the year at Arcare Caboolture.

From singing carols, having Christmas concerts and a visit from Santa’s elves, Christmas is in full swing at the residence.

Tonight, more than 20 clients were about to experience a special Carols by the Candlelight event.

When the live musician began singing the famous ‘Silent Night’, everyone waved their multi-coloured candles in the air in unison.

It was truly a beautiful sight to see as the colourful candles lit up the lounge room.

Attending the Christmas carols is big part of the holiday tradition and the clients were so happy to be part of Arcare Caboolture’s Carols by the Candlelight event.

And all throughout the residence, the sound of the guitar and everyone’s jolly voices could be heard.

Christmas just isn’t Christmas without some good ol’ carolling.

Here at Arcare Carnegie, the local choir group came by the residence to perform some carols for us.

The music brought peace and joy to many of the clients as they relived their memories of Christmas once again.

The Jewish community at Arcare Caulfield is ever growing.

This year, the Caulfield community celebrated both Hanukkah and Christmas during the Holiday season.

Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday, which lasts for eight days and commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire. Hanukkah is also referred to as the Jewish Festival of Lights.

During Hanukkah, traditions like lighting the menorah, playing the dreidel game, cooking, baking and eating delicious food such as brisket, gelt, latkes and kugel, take place.

For the entire month of December at Arcare Caulfield, the Menorah was placed on full display, adjacent to the Christmas tree.

Many clients were delighted to see that both holidays were being equally recognised and celebrated within the community.

“It’s great to see both traditions being recognised. Most people would normally only  focus on Christmas, however I’m so happy that the lifestyle team are hosting events and activities for everyone, from any and every faith and background. The Holiday season should be for everyone.” One client said.

The Arcare Cheltenham community engaged in a range of festive activities during the month of December.

A large group of clients, volunteeers and team members travelled to visit Crown Casino, where they enjoyed taking photos at the ArtVo exhibit and relished watching Crown’s iconic Christmas Spectacular performance in the Atrium.

The clients were amazed and emotional when the Christmas Spectacular performance began. As the large displayed opened, the figures danced and the music played, the clients reflected and reminisced about their past Christmas experiences with family. The clients swayed and sand along to the music, as a Christmas story unfolded before their eyes.

On Thursday 19th December, clients, family members ,team members and friends came together to celebrate Arcare Cheltenham’s annual Christmas party and carols.

The fabulous, Natalie Jay performed some classic Christmas song for the community to enjoy. The familiar tunes before much comfort t those in the audience, with groups cuddling up to one another; appreciating each other. Some chose to dance along to the music, while other preferred to sing along in their seats.

After the performance had concluded, two Mrs Claus’ came around to each clients, granting them with some early Christmas presents from Arcare Cheltenham.

On Wednesday 11th December, the Arcare Craigieburn community hosted their annual Christmas party. All of the clients, team members, friends and family members were invited to come together to celebrate the Holiday season.

The festivities began at 2pm with local singing group, Sister and Misters performing some classic Christmas tunes. The singing group, who have participated in the community’s Christmas festivities for the last three years, always receive a fabulous reception from the clients. The clients enjoyed singing and dancing along the music for much of the afternoon.

There was also a surprise visit from the big man himself… client, Ted, who was aptly dressed as Santa Clause.

Ted exclaimed, “Ho ho ho! Phew it’s hot in this suit!”, as he handed around homemade cookies from Make N Bake to each client. The clients had a lovely afternoon, enjoying one another’s company.

Client, Eileen said, “ I had a lovely time singing along”.

Eight Mile Plains

Christmas brings about a season of choir-singing and caroling for the clients at Arcare Eight Mile Plains.

Wearing Christmas hats and headbands, the clients had even taken the time to decorate their own choir shirts during a craft activity.

Even while singing, the unique personalities of all the clients shone through as they had a laugh and shared a joke.

You could just tell that they were truly enjoying themselves!

Families who were present thanked the lifestyle team, Ruth and Vanessa for this wonderful opportunity for their loved ones to be part of this choir.

On Friday 13th December, the Arcare Epping community opened their doors to the wider community for their annual Christmas Market.

The every inch of the 5-star residence was decorated for the festive season; leaving no room for anyone to miss out on catching the Christmas spirit. Clients and visitors frequently complimented the residence’s large display in the foyer, with even a big red chair being placed out in anticipation of Santa’s arrival.

The event started at 5pm, with clients and their families being invited outside to enjoy a classic Aussie BBQ dinner.

Soon, large swarms of community members descended on the courtyard space, enjoying the free jumping castle, fairy floss, popcorn, face painting, live music, carnival rides and animal farm.

Clients also enjoyed the all of the attractions, however special interest was taken in the animal farm. Several clients enjoyed walking and sitting amongst the farm animals, patting, feeding and watching them go about their business. Big smiles could be seen and laughter could be heard as some of the more cheeky goats tried to steal food from the around bushes and even hitch a ride of a client’s walker.

However it wouldn’t have been a Christmas event without the man in the big red suit, making an appearance. While Santa didn’t ride in on reindeer and a sleigh, he did chose to hitch a ride on an old Ford Ute; what could be more Australian?

Over 150 people attended this year’s Christmas Market; absolutely smashing last year’s attendance.

The Arcare Epping community would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

Arcare Glenhaven celebrated their Christmas Party earlier in the month to ensure as many family members could join in.

There were over 40 people in the audience that night but the group was feeling pretty confident because they have been practicing for a while now.

As the evening of carols began, the melodic voices of the choir group and the instrumental piano could be heard throughout the residence.

And song after song, the audience moved to the music and gave many rounds of applause.

This year, Christmas was celebrated a little differently, with clients and team members preparing and performing a pantomime performance of Pinocchio, with a fun Christmas twist.

Two clients, two carers and lifestyle coordinator, Monique had been rehearing the performance for weeks leading up to the party. With their costumes being generously donated from the ABC, especially for their performance, the group were nervous, as they felt that they had to deliver the performance of their lives.

But Santa only had one thing on his mind and that was to go around the room, giving little sweet treats to everyone, along with his Christmas helper.

Priezs were also given to clients and team members who had the best Christmas decorations.
