This year, Arcare Home Care clients, Antoinette and Giovani (better known as John), celebrated 60 years of happy marriage. Their love story isn’t a common one, as the pair were actually married by proxy in 1956.
The couple met when someone who lived in the same Italian town as Antoinette suggested that she write to John in Australia, who had migrated in 1952.
After exchanging many letters and photos, the couple decided to marry despite living halfway across the world from each other. This wasn’t an issue as Antoinette’s cousin stood in for John on the day.
Three months later and Antoinette made the move to be with her love in Australia. In 1958, the pair had twin girls, Michelle and Elvira. Michelle lives in Italy now and Elvira lives in Australia.
On a recent overseas trip to visit her parents, Michelle spoke of the strong family values that they had grown up with and now instil into their own children.
Antoinette and John are kept busy with three grandchildren, one great grandchild and another one on the way.
