Who are you? What is your role? What are you responsible for?
My name is Navdeep (Nav) Gill and I am a registered nurse at Arcare Craigieburn. I am responsible for caring for clients and providing leadership and first line supervision to enrolled nurses (ENs) and personal care assistants (PCAs), including the allocation of duties. Whilst working in collaboration with the clinical care coordinator and residence manager, I provide quality nursing services to clients in accordance with Arcare policies and procedures.
What skills/qualifications do you need for your job?
I have completed my Bachelor of Nursing from Victoria University in 2009. For such a demanding yet rewarding career, you are expected to have not only the health care skills, but also unique qualities of character and spirit. The following skills are very important for a nurse to have:
What’s your advice for someone hoping to work in aged care?
Kicking off your career in an aged care can be challenging and daunting. One of the attribute needed for a positive experience in the aged care workforce is never being hesitant and afraid to ask questions. There is a steep learning curve initially, however, to be a valuable member of the team, you are expected to adapt quickly, have a desire to learn, be sincere and should respect your peers and aged care clients.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
You get to experience the personal satisfaction of knowing that you are delivering something that genuinely makes a difference. It gives you the chance to meet clients, who belong to different ethnic backgrounds and make a tremendous difference in their quality of life. They are full of interesting stories and facts about themselves or a time they lived through. Unlike most people you come across in work—the elderly love to share their experiences.
How do you relax when you are not at work?
After a productive day at work, I love to go to the gym and also listen to music.
What did you want to be when you were younger?
When I was younger, I wanted to be pediatrician because I loved helping kids.
What might someone be surprised to know about you?
I am a great fan of “Harry Potter” movies and whenever I get a chance, I watch the whole series in one sitting. My favourite part from the series is “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”.
