Asking the important question: R U OK? at Arcare North Lakes

R U OK? Day is always a significant day on the calendar and even more so nowadays. In our Arcare North Lakes community, we believe that talking about individual mental health is very important.

So, we encourage our clients to talk about how they are feeling and we ensure they feel safe and welcomed in approaching the Lifestyle team and their dedicated Personal Support Workers.

There are many factors that lead to this, for example, one’s childhood upbringing and growing up in a different era can impact their willingness to share their thoughts and feelings, and open up.

For this reason, our team members are trained to look out for signs and changes in someone’s personality that may indicate they are not feeling themselves.

The next step is to offer simple gestures such as suggesting a cup of tea together, a walk in the garden or a chat on the phone with family.

These small doses of interaction and activity can be enough to start a conversation and put a smile of their face.

As you can see from the photo of two clients, the simple gesture of sharing chocolates with one another can make someone’s day.

For R U OK? Day, we have also placed posters around our Arcare North Lakes residence as reminders.

Over cupcakes, clients and team members engaged in open conversations about mental health and wellbeing.
