Steve Kosta and the Men of League Foundation

A few members of the Gold Coast Men of League Foundation came down to Arcare Pimpama to meet a very special client, Steve Kosta.

The Men of League Foundation is an Australian Rugby League Charity that contributes back to the community by regularly visiting members of the Rugby League community and by providing practical assistance and social support.

And this special visit was put together by thoughtful volunteers Bea and Terry Wright who knew about Steve’s eventful sporting history.

In the 1970s, Steve Kosta was an Australian rugby league footballer.

He played for the Newtown Jets and he was coached by Clive Churchill from 1971 to 1973.

Kosta made his first-grade debut for South Sydney in 1971 where he made a total of 4 appearances for the Souths.

Then, he played for the South Sydney Rabbitohs in the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) competition, where he was coached by Clarrie Jeffries and Paul Broughton from 1974 to 1978.

The men that came to visit on the day were Greg Sylvester, Paul Hague and Graeme Farrar, who was the ex-captain of New Zealand NRL when he played from 1961 to 1966.

They all had a passion for the sport as they spent over an hour chatting about all things rugby.

They also shared with us that Steve was a speedy and elusive Centre who mesmerised his opponents with his uncanny skills.

When quizzed by the boys about who was the toughest player, Steve swiftly nominated Arthur Beetson and ‘Lurch” John O’Neill.

Steve was overwhelmed by the visit from these gentlemen as he had the opportunity to relive his sporting days and to catch up on the latest in sport.

‘This just made my day, I’m so glad they came for a chat. Rugby means a lot to me and I still enjoy watching it to this day,’ he said.

The Gold Coast Men of League thanked Terry and Bea for arranging the surprise visit for Steve.

But before the gentlemen left, they also presented Steve with a ‘Men of League’ cap and magazine and promised to return soon!
