Walk down memory lane with Joy Hay

Arcare Aged Care is passionate about sharing the inspiring stories of our residents. Our relationship first approach enables team members to partake in special milestone moments with residents and their family and friends.

Over at Arcare Peregian Springs, resident Joyce (Joy for short) Hay recently celebrated her special 90th birthday with family from Tasmania, Cairns, Wollongong and Noosa. The pandemic prevented her loved ones in London, England and North Carolina, USA from attending in person but they continued to shower her with love and best wishes from afar. The lifestyle and catering team at Arcare Peregian Springs helped to put the day together and ensure that everything went off without a hitch.

Joyce Loretta Hay was born in Lithgow, NSW on April 18th 1931. She is the only daughter to parents, Selwyn and Beatrice Boon and sister to her brothers, Neil and Roger. The family moved to Wollongong, NSW during the depression in search of work.

Family is everything to them. Joyce married her husband, Winston (Bill) Hay in 1950 in Wollongong, NSW. She was a full-time mother of her “angelic” sons, Christopher, Stephen and David. Joyce and Bill’s family extended when their sons married their daughter in laws: Sharon, Lee-Ann and Glenda. They are both doting grandparents of Mathew, Ben, Mitchell, Melissa, Brenton, James and are very excited to soon be a great-grandmother again.

After the boys were old enough and finally got out from under her feet, Joyce started back in the work force and was the Office Manager at Maguire and McInerny Solicitors until the end of her working career.

Outside of work, Joyce loved her tennis and played for many years, keeping her fit and on her toes. Joyce and her husband Bill travelled the world with their close friends over many years. Her rum cake, blackberry jam and Christmas Puddings were legendary and is still missed by her sons!

Joyce and Bill moved to Noosa in early 2000’s and were active members at Noosa Anglican Church and founding members of the Probus club in Noosaville. She is now enjoying the finer side of life at Arcare Peregian Springs, where she can enjoy fellowship and her favourite activities in comfort.

Special thanks to Arcare Lifestyle Coordinator, Diane Tyler for capturing this story and ensuring the day went smoothly for Joy and her beloved family.

Happy birthday to you, Joyce!
