Recently Arcare Surrey Hills opened their beautiful café up for the public so that local neighbours can get to know our community better. Since doing so, there have been quite a number of friendly faces popping in for a coffee and a chat.
Susan and her friend, Carolyn, had planned to meet at another café on the afternoon of Tuesday 7th March, when the night before she had opened Facebook and seen an advertisement for the Arcare Surrey Hills café. Susan, an editor, proofreader and writer, decided they would change their plans and meet at Arcare in the hope of meeting someone who might be interested in her line of work – writing life stories.
While Susan and Carolyn enjoyed their coffee, Susan noticed a lady passing through the café. ‘I know that lady,’she said to team members who had stopped by for a chat. ‘I’m sure I know that lady! It’s Mary Mead!’ It turns out that Mary had worked for Susan’s dad for over 30 years. She exclaimed, ‘I haven’t seen her for years!’
When Mary was informed of Susan’s visit to the café and wish to see her, she was amazed. ‘I can’t believe it!’ Mary said. ‘I’ve been thinking about her father recently and wondering if he is even still alive. I would love to come and see her.’
As the team member walked with Mary around to the café they were discussing the benefits of the café being open to the public. ‘I truly needed this today,’ Mary told the team member gratefully. Reunited with old friends, Mary discovered that her old boss was indeed still alive and in another aged care residence. ‘I watched Susan grow up from a little girl,’ she informed the team member.
