Kalimera! One of our clients here at Arcare Helensvale St James, Reza taught us to how say good morning in Greek at one of our many Cultural Day celebrations.
Everyone had a very enjoyable, happy and colourful day as decorations were in blue and white, placemats were of landmarks of Greece and Goddesses.
A Greek word was chosen for our word game and clients had a great morning creating smaller words from one long Greek word.
We also discussed English words that actually originate from Greek words and their meanings. For example, words like Europe, Cemetery, Marathon, Marmalade come from Greek!
Here goes the legend of how Europe came to be. One upon a time, Europe was a mythological Greek princess with big beautiful eyes. Zeus fell in love with her, so he transformed himself into a bull.
Europe sat on the bull and was taken on a faraway trip to what is today’s Europe.
Team members dressed up for the day in blue and white colours and we even had a few Greek goddesses.
The clients all love it when they get the chance to dress up and learn about a different culture.
Shirley said, “I have just moved into St James and this is just lovely. I met a nice friend Jean and I am enjoying the atmosphere today”.
A lovely lunch was served, and all clients enjoyed a glass of wine, beer and soft drinks.
We joked about throwing plates while dancing along to Greek music in a circle.
In the afternoon, clients enjoyed watching the movie “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”. What a classic! Client have not stopped talking about their lovely day and are all wondering when the next cultural day will be celebrated.
