Chasing piglets, bottle-feeding baby goats and biting into a hot sausage sizzle brought endless joy to Glenhaven on one very cold Tuesday. Arcare Glenhaven’s courtyard turned farmyard on May 1, raving with cheers and laughter as clients, staff and their families enjoyed the company of sheep, pigs, goats, rabbits, chickens, ducks and a calf.
The cold weather went unnoticed for most as the warmth from the animals wrapped in their blankets was warming up clients when they nursed them.
‘Peggy decided it was still too cold to come outside,’ said Lifestyle Coordinator Chloe Poulsen, ‘We found her waving to the animals from her window instead!’
The fun still found those who could not go outside when the farm staff visited clients’ suites with animals for them to pet.
These furry farmyard friends brought the entire Glenhaven community together as the Arcare team also brought along their families to join in the fun with clients’ families and grandchildren. Clients were meeting the children they had always heard about when chatting to staff on the daily, which sparked great conversation between many ages and many families.
‘We thought the clients were just talking with their own grandchildren, until I realised they were actually talking to others from different families. It was so good to see them all interacting with each other,’ said Chloe.
Everyone’s favourite entertainment was the cheeky piglet that kept attempting to escape from the pen area – it must have been able to smell the food at the cafe just inside! Lucky enough, the farmyard animals were huddled up and sent back home before the team began cooking the barbeque.
Along with Arcare’s five-star services comes individually plated meals in intimate dining rooms, so for some of our true blue Aussie clients the barbeque in the courtyard was an exciting trip down memory lane to the days where steaks and snags on the barbie was a typical dinner.
Due to the popularity of the lunch, a community barbeque has now been added to Arcare Glenhaven’s monthly calendar!
The farmyard visit welcomed new relationships between clients and staff, strengthening the already vibrant community at Arcare Glenhaven. Elderly, families and youth alike were overjoyed with the special visitors.
Everyone is now looking forward to next month’s barbeque for a catch up, even without the furry farmyard friends.
