A small group of men and women from Arcare Glenhaven participates in their first lawn bowls outing back in August. We visited the retirement village next door Living Choice, to play a game or two of bowls on their full-sized bowling greens. Unfortunately, the weather was too wet and prevented everyone from playing outdoors.
The thoughtful Living Choice sports committee then organised a game of indoor bowls so that no one would be disappointed.
On arrival we were greeted by volunteers who each had an umbrella to help us inside without getting wet, this was a big help to the Arcare team.
Once inside we sat down to a beautiful morning tea provided by two of the wonderful Living Choice residents. There was a great variety of yummy treats that everyone enjoyed.
Now it just so happened that the Arcare group was made up of four men and four women which meant we had the perfect amount for mixed teams. Six of which had played before, Bert even played in the Queensland Championships and the other two were excited about the opportunity to learn something new.
Each team came up with their own names for the score board, they were Judy and John (Team JJ), Bert and Marj (Team Barj), Malcom and Shirley (Team Mirley), Margaret and Paul (Team MAP).
The residents had such a fun time playing the games the staff had to remind everyone of lunch and that if we didn’t leave soon, we could miss out. Everyone was so caught up in the games and learning new skills that we all lost track of time.
When we were leaving and saying our goodbyes, 2 of the volunteers explained to us that they were competing in the Living Choice Lawn Bowls Grand Final on Monday afternoon. We decided on Monday to take the men down to watch the final and support the men that helped us out on the Friday. They lost by 1 but we had a great time watching the match and the volunteers were so pleased to see we came down to watch and support them
We will be visiting once a month for now to continue to play lawn bowls, all the residents are hoping to play on the big outdoor green next visit if the weather permits.
The Living Choice volunteer were so helpful and kind to our residents It was a lovely display of community engagement and friendship. Both parties are hoping to continue to build this new friendship and hopefully invited even more residents and volunteers down to join in
