People of Arcare – Cath McDonald

Today we introduce you to Cath McDonald, Residence Manager for Arcare Castlemaine. She has worked in aged care since 1980 which has been and still is her passion. She shares her pearls of wisdom about working in her current role and what she is looking forward to in the future.

How many years have you been in Aged Care? Any relevant experience we can share?

I have worked in aged care since 1980 – it always has always been and is my passion. I have taught Nursing, and other health related subjects, I ran a Psych Geri Unit for Goulburn Valley Health for 10 years. I have been a CEO of a disability organisation and worked nationally for several well-known national and international companies.

What was it about Arcare/this role that attracted you?

This role is in my hometown – I am excited to be working with an organisation which provides a 5-star environment in my community and feel responsible for ensuring that our care also reflects that 5-star level for our elders.

What are you looking forward to in your role at Arcare Castlemaine? (e.g. relationships, the community and the residents etc)

All the above – that’s one of the exciting things about managing in aged care – every day brings a new challenge and providing the best outcome for our residents is enormously satisfying. This is an exciting community to be working in and I expect we shall see some engaging and sensational programs emanating from this site.

What do you enjoy about your role and working in aged care?

I just love working with people, getting the best out of my teams and seeing the lives of the elders in our care enhanced because we are working with them. We are entrusted with the care of the people who made the life we are living now – what a wonderful position to be in to be able to acknowledge that through your care and attention every single day.

In your own words, what do you see as the benefits for working at Arcare Castlemaine?

We can make a difference to the Castlemaine community.

For anyone unsure about working in aged care, what would you them?

Come on board, its challenging, exciting, clinically interesting and you will hear the best stories! From our elders and from your team members.

Is there anything else that you think that potential applicants for Castlemaine should know?

We are a team that values all members and gets excited seeing someone (worker or resident) achieving life goals.

What pearls of wisdom or words of encouragement do you live by?

Kindness always works.

What hobbies or interests do you have outside of work?

Family, jazz, reading, writing/journaling, festival work, bird watching, bush walks.

Anything else you want to share that’s relevant

Organised and annual holiday for my residents from the psych-geri unit – first time this was done in Australia, organised helicopter and hot air balloon rides for my residents in Bendigo.
