#PeopleofArcare – Chris Nwokeke

Arcare Aged Care shares more about Ikechukwu Christopher Nwokeke, Social Worker for the Sunshine coast area in Queensland.

How long have you been working at Arcare?

I started working for Arcare Maroochydore in 2018 as an environmental staff while studying Bachelor of Social Work at the university. I also did my second 500 hours of placement at Arcare which helped me in securing the role as a social worker immediately after graduation in November 2020.

I currently work across three Arcare sites in Sunshine Coast (Maroochydore, Peregian Springs, and Noosa).

What do you enjoy about your role and working in aged care?

I look forward to coming to work every day. I’ve been in the industry for a long time. It’s pretty good. I’ve always loved doing what I do. Just the joy you can put on resident’s and their family faces, just by being caring, respectful, and humble.

As a social worker, I enjoy being there to help and support my residents during good and bad times. I’m able to utilise this through providing counselling and emotional support for issues such as adjustment to illness and disability, loss and grief, relationship stress and mental health issues.

I also persevere towards advocating for their rights and help also in solving challenges they face, including social, financial, legal and emotional issues.

What is a memorable moment or story you recall working at your residence with either a resident or a team member?

I’ve had few memorable moments working both as an environmental staff and a social worker for Arcare. One that comes often is residents and their families going to the manager to say how good they feel after having a conversation with me.

Seeing that the residents I work with are happy and settled makes me want to do more for them. I build a good relationship with my residents which makes my work easier because they see me as a friend they can trust and listen to rather than a social worker who comes to talk to them.

What pearls of wisdom or words of encouragement do you live by?

“Allow your passion to become your purpose, and it will one day become your profession”.

What hobbies or interests do you have outside of work?

I love football (soccer). My first professional contract in Australia was in 2020 when I signed for the Sunshine Coast Fire who plays in the Queensland premier league. Before then, I played for Kawana and Caloundra FC. Currently, I play for Coolum Football club who plays in the Sunshine Coast league.
