During the month of December at Arcare Hope Island, clients and team members were hard at work raising money for the furry bushfire victims at Currumbin Wildlife Hospital.
Bocchetta provided Lifestyle Co-ordinator Allison Ferguson with a box full of native animal soft toys to be sold at their Christmas Party.
And they also raised funds through lucky door prizes and working with local companies.
They managed to raise a total amount of $850!
As part of the donation, clients from Arcare Hope Island had the opportunity to tour the wildlife hospital and to present a cheque to the community organisation.
Client Patricia Rice commented, ‘I am so happy that we were able to assist in raising money for the care of the injured animals.’
‘We did it for the bushfire victims; the koalas here in Queensland. The residents really wanted to contribute and it has been absolutely heart-warming to see everyone working together’ Lifestyle Co-ordinator Allison Ferguson added.
As we split off into two groups, Foundation Coordinator Candice Dixon and Hospital Director Whitney Kelly brought us on a behind-the-scenes tour of the hospital.
As part of the exclusive tour, we were shown around the koala and raptor rehab sections where they have a special freezer used to keep feather transplants for injured birds.
We got to see baby turtles swimming in tanks while they were being rehabilitated and we also witnessed a koala that was recently cleared off chlamydia, leave the sanctuary as it was about to be released back into the wild.
It was amazing to observe the dedication and skill of each and every staff and volunteer at the hospital.
After the tour, Arcare Hope Island’s clients and team members were all smiles as they presented the cheque to Currumbin Wildlife Hospital staff.
Client Leigh Harris commented, ‘It’s great that I still have the opportunity to contribute in the community and help our native wildlife.’
‘It was a real community effort, you can just see the difference it made on them, to be able to contribute and help out the koalas affected by the bushfire. It truly gave them a sense of purpose and belonging.’ Allison added.
Hospital Director Whitney Kelly also said, ‘Every donation we receive makes a major impact into our daily care to treat rehabilitated Australian wildlife. And we rely on the community to fund the Hospital in our effort to ensure wildlife are here for many years to come.’
The Currumbin Wildlife Hospital is run by the community so they rely on public donations, volunteers and dedicated vets who help to keep the hospital running.
And the clients and team members at Arcare Hope Island are doing their part to help bushfire-affected koalas and all animals big or small at Currumbin Wildlife Hospital.
Jamie Loh is Arcare's Community Marketing Officer for Queensland. Jamie joined the Arcare team in early 2019, stepping straight into her responsibilities which include communications with the broader community and some internal communications responsibilities. Jamie is a firm advocate for consistent, varied communications to help bridge the gap between those living in aged care residences and those living in wider communities. Jamie utilises a broad array of strategies to help improve messaging and boost brand awareness. Jamie is passionate about improving engagement between those who are enjoying their retirement in Arcare residences and family and friends who live in the wider community. She is always advocating for new methods of communicating, including new strategies and mediums. After graduating from Brisbane State High School in 2014, Jamie attended the University of Queensland where she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Communications (Public Relations) and Arts (Japanese). During her time at the University of Queensland, Jamie attended an intensive exchange program at Waseda University in Tokyo for two months.
