For Indian Independence Day, clients at Arcare Helensvale St James learnt a lot about India’s cultural, history, traditions and customs.
Some of the activities they did included having discussions on India’s history of migration, their national language, traditions and special holidays, and the role of family in caring for the aged.
It is common to see four or five generations of family all living together in the same household.
Family certainly plays a central role in the lives of most Indians.
One of our team members at St James, Suki was very excited!
She arrived on the day dressed up in her beautiful yellow sari and eagerly shared her culture with St James team members and clients.
Some of the famous landmarks and important figures they discussed included The Famous Gardens of Kashmir, Red Fort, Taj Mahal and Mahatma Gandhi who was the prominent leader of the Indian Independence movement in British-ruled India.
It was a wonderful day celebrating a different culture.
The clients got to enjoy a scrumptious lunch of lamb tikka masala, jalfrezi, Naan bread and Indian-flavoured roasted vegetables.
For dessert, they feasted on sponge finger jelly, mango mousse slice, along with wine, beer and lemonade.
Being able to learn and participate in our diverse cultures is what makes St James so unique.
