Milestone for Mary

As Arcare Home Care Client, Elizabeth “Mary” Roberts is about to celebrate her 102nd birthday, Care Consultant Shelly made a visit delivering flowers, a card and catching up on Mary’s life.

Mary was born on 26 July 1916 in Rockhampton, Queensland.

In her family, Mary is the eldest daughter and has a younger step brother.

Mary moved to North Queensland at the age of 20 with her mother.

Unfortunately, Mary’s father died in the war when Mary was only three months old.

In 1938, at the age of 20, Mary got married and moved to Winton, Queensland with her husband.

Winton is located 177km north west of Longreach and Mary was less that pleased with the move.

Mary said of living in Winton, “oh it was terrible, hot in the day and freezing at night.”

Throughout the years Mary travelled to many places overseas.

Her first trip was to Japan and Hong Kong in 1956 on a cruise ship with her mother. On that trip Mary bought a musical box which she still has to this day.

Mary has also explored much of the UK with visits to Scotland, Ireland and England between 1956 and 1985.

Her most recent trip was a cruise to Bangkok and Singapore in 2012.

Always up for an adventure, when Mary was 60 she took up square dancing with her husband.

They both fell in love with square dancing and decided to hire a community hall to teach their new-found skills to the community.

All of the proceeds from the square dancing lessons were donated to the local hospital for the benefit of the community.

Mary doesn’t let her age define her and since turning 30 she has declared herself forever 29.

Mary’s motto is, “never complain, be thankful and grateful for what you have.”

Mary and her husband had two children, Peter and Trish, and Mary lives close to them on the Gold Coast.

Mary is looking forward to a big celebration with her family for her birthday.
