Hanging on for Vintage Coat hangers

Every week the clients at Arcare Maroochydore enter the theatre to play Bingo and try their luck in winning their favourite prize on offer – traditional vintage coat hangers.

“The prizes in Bingo are varied but the coat hangers are special as they remind us of those crafts that we did when we were younger,” Margaret said.

The Lifestyle team have had the coat hangers in their bingo prize basket for the past year and every week at least half a dozen coat hangers are won by the residents. Knitted, crocheted, pin-tucked and embroidered with the finest of detail, the coat hangers are reminders of the hand crafts which are becoming a rarity in contemporary society.

“Some of the residents are now doing hand-crafts not attempted for many years as the demand is high”, said the Lifestyle Coordinator. “We also source the vintage coat hangers from the public who donate them for prizes as they know each one makes a resident smile and great reminders of those things that were treasured back in their day,” she said.

“I won three coat hangers today and I couldn’t believe my luck,” Amy said.

The Vintage coat hangers are rare and have become collector’s items and the men collect them such as Barry who said that they make great gifts for his family members.

Due to popular demand the weekly bingo at Arcare Maroochydore is now played twice a week and the residents are happy as they have twice as much chance in winning their treasured prize – the traditional vintage coat hanger!
