The Hillside Community have initiated a joint program with the children from the local kindergarten, Sydenham Community Kindergarten.
Twice a month clients take the short walk across the road to visit their new friends.
The children are so eager to see them that they wait by the gate while their guests walk across the road.
They enjoy a range of activities throughout their time spent together: clients help the children building with their toys, doing craft, chatting and reading.
On a recent visit, David brought along his most treasured possession: his childhood book he received on one particular birthday.
The tattered edges of ‘Kinker visits the animal shelf’ are a representation of how well-loved the book is.
He keeps his book close to him at all times, carrying it in his bag.
Showing off his prized possession was very special for David, and he was excited to share it with the children who he hoped would love it just as much as he did as a child.
David’s first question when he arrived at the kinder was, ‘When can I read my book to the children?’
Initially only a few children sat down to listen to David read but soon quite a crowd had gathered to hear the tale of Kinker.
