On the 5th February, Rachel and Louis Segal celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary at Arcare Caulfield. They planned an afternoon tea with their family, as well as a celebration with family and friends on the weekend following their anniversary.
Rachel and Louis were married at the St. Kilda Synagogue and held their reception at the Samuel Myers Hall on the 5th February 1945.
Louis was in the Airforce at the time and was granted three days leave for his Wedding and honeymoon. For their honeymoon, Louis and Rachel caught the train to Geelong and then the bus (with the local school children) to Portarlington. Louis fondly recalls, “we arrived at the hotel to find we had been given single beds!”
On the day of their Wedding, Louis received a telegram requesting he return to the Base, but Rachel’s brother (also in the Airforce) sent a return telegram saying the couple had already left on their honeymoon!
Louis says the secret to a long and happy marriage is ‘give and take’. He adds with humour… ‘he gives and his wife takes’
In response, Rachel says the secret is lots of patience!
Rachel and Louis have two daughters, two grandchildren & a great-grand child.
