We have a lovely couple here at Arcare Craigieburn and their names are Irma and Roland. They have been married for 62 years. I thought it would be interesting to ask them in their many years of marriage, what makes it a happy one.
Irma advised to always try and get along with one another and that it is very important to give and take, and not always think of yourself. She suggested that if you do have an argument, walk away for a short while to gather your thoughts, and once you feel calmer you can talk the problem through.
She was adamant in saying that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, and Roland agreed wholeheartedly with this, adding that Irma is a good cook.
When Irma first met Roland she thought he was very polite and easy going, yet very respectful. ‘He would never kiss me in front of my parents, which did annoy me a bit!’ She joked. ‘My parents thought he was the best.’
When I asked Roland, he said Irma was very attractive and that he liked the way she always looked at him. He also remarked that she had a nice personality, but did add that she could be a bit bossy at times.
So there are the pearls of wisdom from Irma and Roland of what makes a successful marriage. As I was interviewing them, there was plenty of laughter and joking around which tells me that a sense of humour is also a vital ingredient in their happy marriage.
