Over the last twelve months, Arcare Hillside client, Gus and lifestyle coordinator, Susie have formed a very close bond, over an unusual commonality; horse racing.
The pair discovered their mutual love for horse racing, back when Susie worked as Gus’ dedicated carer. One morning, Gus was checking the form guide in the newspaper, as he always does, when Susie spotted him reading it and started up an engaging conversation. Gus soon found out that Susie has a vested interested in a particular race horse and jockey, and how she, herself, enjoys reading the form guide and tracking the races.
From that moment on, Susie and Gus have shared their love and passion for horse racing with each other, which has lead to the formation of an amazing friendship.
Now there isn’t one day that will go by, that Gus and Susie won’t discuss racing, jockeys or a horse of some kind.
“Our little conversations are the highlight of my day!” Susie said.
Every morning, Gus will study the form guide, to ensure that he can report back to Susie: what races are running; who the jockeys are, and which horses look like a ‘sure thing’. Gus even keeps a special look out for the race horse and jockey, that Susie follows, to make sure that she doesn’t miss a trot.
When team members asked Gus why he likes to update Susie about her horse and jockey, he says, “I feel that I’m making it easier on her, so that she can go on her break and not waste time reading the form guide or placing a bet.”
In November, Gus and Susie were gearing up to watch the 2019 Lexus Melbourne Cup race together at Arcare Hillside. The pair thought that it would be a lovely way to encapsulate their year of friendship and their fun racing conversations.
