Carol DeBoer moved to Australia from America earlier this year. Carol was eager connect with her new community after she settled in, and she found that the best way to connect to the community, was to give back to the community through volunteering.
Carol decided to volunteer her time at Arcare Surrey Hills, and as a result, she has developed some lifelong friendships.
Every week, Carol visits the Arcare residence to provide clients with companionship. Carol likes to accompany clients to activities such as happy hour and high tea. Due to the social nature of these activities, Carol has found that they are ideal for conversation and relationship building.
Carol visits are the highlight of the week for many clients. Through her time volunteering, Carol has developed a particularly close friendship with clients, Lois and Ruby.
Over Winter, Carol had to return to America for three months. During this time, the clients missed her presence at the residence terribly. Lois and Ruby kept in contact with Carol via email during her time away; team members would often help them both draft their emails.
However Carol ensured that they returned back to Australia and to the Surrey Hills community, just in time to celebrate Lois and Ruby’s joint birthday party.
Lois and Ruby were thrilled that Carol made the effort to travel back especially for their birthdays.
Lifestyle coordinator, Monique said, “It’s really special to see the lifelong connections that Carol has made at Arcare Surrey Hills, since volunteering. She is definitely a valued member of our community, and we hope that see continues to volunteer her time in the future.“
