#VolunteersofArcare – Lauren McFarland

In celebration of National Volunteers Week 2021, we share the story of one of our volunteers at Arcare Sydenham Hillside,Lauren McFarland and her four year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Bobby.

Tell us about yourself?

I enjoy outings with my dog Bobby; being a part of Therapy Dogs (with Dogs Victoria), horse riding, and spending time with family.

What Arcare residence do you volunteer at?

I’ve volunteered at Arcare Sydenham (Hillside) since April 2019.

What activities do you assist with as a volunteer?

Pet therapy with my four year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Bobby.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering?

I enjoy seeing people’s faces light up when they see my dog and hearing all of their interesting stories. It is so rewarding and my dog absolutely loves all of the attention too.

Why did you choose to be a volunteer at Arcare Aged Care?

I have always wanted to be involved in Pet Therapy and Bobby has the most brilliant nature, I just wanted to share him with other people to help brighten up their day. It has been hard not volunteering at Arcare Aged Care due to COVID and trying to work out when the best time to come back is. I’m delighted to be back at Arcare Aged Care to visit our friends.

Favourite moment while volunteering, so far?

Before COVID, being invited to Christmas Carols in 2019 was very special. Just seeing the joy on peoples faces and hearing from them how much they enjoyed mine and Bobby’s company and creating special memories together.

What tips or advice would you give to someone who is thinking about volunteering at Arcare?

If someone has the time and is thinking about volunteering in Aged Care, they should. It is so rewarding and really means a lot to the residents.
