Pets with a purpose

A new lifestyle program has hatched at the Arcare Knox community.

For the Spring, the lifestyle team decided to introduce the Henny Penny hatching program into the community. This program is designed to provide clients with the opportunity to watch eggs hatching in a specially designed incubator, and then to observe the hatched chicks at play in a large, clear-sided brooding pen.

A total of twelve eggs were delivered to the community, and the clients began patiently waiting and watching for the little chicks to emerge.

Positioned in the foyer of Arcare Knox, the incubator became quite the talking point for visitors, team members and clients.

There was so much delight and joy felt throughout the community, as individuals spent hours watching the incubator.

Client, Janet especially loved making her daily trips from her suite to look over the eggs. The program provided Janet with purpose, as she now has a reason to come out of her suite to socialise and sit by the eggs to ensure that they all came out all right. Janet was ecstatic when she finally saw the first shell start to crack.

Janet now continues to sit by the side of the incubator, where the little chicks play. She even will occasionally get one or two out for a hold and a play. On one occasion, a rather adventurous chick decided to hop onto Janet’s head, which made everyone in the room laugh.

“They are just the cutest things! It has been such fun having them here, it really has brightened up my day seeing them come out and run around in the pen.” Janet said.

When the chickens start to grow too big for their incubator, team members have already pledged to take them home and raise them, promising to occasionally bring them in for a visit.
