Volunteers of Arcare – Matthew Walter Etty-Leal

For this week’s series of #VolunteersofArcare we introduce Matthew Walter Etty-Leal, he has been volunteering for over 40 years, but at Arcare Surrey Hills for the last three. He provides Australian history presentations for the residence each month and has done 18 so far. The residents really look forward to his presentations each month!

 

What are your hobbies? What do you do outside of volunteering?

Reading, cooking, grandfather – babysitting, going to ballet, live theatre and art galleries, attending U3A talks and church, exercise and yoga classes, watching movies, holidays.

 

What activities do you assist with? How do you choose to volunteer your time at Arcare? (e.g. bingo, one on one companionship, Daily Bulletins etc.)

Giving Australian History presentations monthly – 18 done

 

What do you enjoy most about volunteering?

Interacting with audience who are encouraged to comment, answer questions.

 

Why did you choose to become a volunteer? Why did you choose to volunteer at Arcare?

I have been volunteering for over 40 years and have taken on more local volunteering since my retirement in 2015.

 

Tell us about one of your favourite moments when volunteering at your residence / with the resident/s and/or the team?

The feedback of the residents who kindly show their appreciation of my presentations.

 

What tips or advice would you give to someone who is thinking about volunteering in Aged Care or at Arcare?

Get to know the residents and encourage them to talk about their lives.

 

Do you have anything else you would like to share?

Research found that one of the best cures for loneliness is when others benefit from our actions, and they express thanks for our help. So, as active volunteers with a good diet, we are all increasing our chances of leading a long, healthy, and happy life.
